Head of Art
As Head of Art, I am responsible for the direction and quality of all artistic output from Ripstone. This covers game artwork (the traditional Art Director role) but also the wider scope of company and studio branding, web presence and liaising with the Marketing department and third parties on promotional materials.
More specifically on The Queen's Gambit Chess the role involved management of both internal an external artists as well as liaising directly with our partners at Netflix.
This project was developed in Unreal and delivered on mobile in a huge variety of languages and SKUs which required a lot of discipline and tight communication which I feel can be underrated in teams.
In the early stages of the project, character look dev was a focal point going through multiple iterations of user testing to define a look that not only appeals to chess players and fans of the show but mobile gamers in general. I feel we met the goal of creating an accessible chess game for everyone and the art created for this project really was a love letter to the show, while injecting it's own personality along the way.
More details on the game can be found here as well links to some interviews and deep dives on Artstation.
